Small Cool Contest

Small Cool 2009: William & William's Eclectic Graystone Small Division #01
Apartment Therapy is in the final stages of voting in their Small Cool Contest, described as the smallest, coolest homes of 2009. The contest advertises $10,000 in prizes for the place voted Coolest by Apartment Therapy members if you’re a US citizen and a certificate of recognition if you’re not. Bummer.
There are some lovely entries with good ideas on dealing with small spaces but I have to wonder about about a small home contest in which the the size is restricted to 1200 square feet or less. 1200 square feet? I think that’s the biggest place I’ve ever lived in and that was when I was raising three kids!
If you want to see Real Small Cool Homes, check out the folks at the Small Living Journal who write about micro homes and other truly small spaces. While my downtown Vancouver apartment is not micro sized (390 square feet), it is significantly smaller than the spaces in the Small Cool Contest. Perhaps I’ll have my own contest of spaces 500 square feet or less. That’s a size I can relate to.
Small is a relative term. What constitutes a small home to you?
