Looking Out of Windows
We spend our lives looking out of windows at the rest of the world, yearning for something else while our own “house” sits empty.
What are we looking for?
I think there is a shift happening, perhaps, brought on by the economic downturn, or the growing concern over global warming, or the shrinking oil supplies.
It could be that we’ve become disenchanted with the endless buying and the endless workdays that fuel that lifestyle - the one that we are told we want, that we need, that we deserve.
We want to slow down and live.
This weekend, Devlon and I took a hike through the magnificent Capilano Canyon. We bused up to the Cleveland Dam and marveled at the snowy mountains and the lush, green moss that padded our footfalls. We took loads of pictures and ate sandwiches which weren’t very good but we ate hungrily and happily.
These are the days that I love. These are the days that I feel truly rich.
We have bigger houses but smaller families,
more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees, but less sense
more knowledge, but less judgement
more experts, but more problems
more medicines, but less healthiness.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back
but have trouble crossing the street to meet the neighbor.
We built more computers to hold more information
to produce more copies than ever…
but have less communication.
We have become long on quantity but short on quality.
These are fast times of fast foods but slow digestion.
Tall man but short character.
Steep profits but shallow relationships.
It is a time where there is much in the window
but nothing in the room. The 14th Dalai Lama

What a coincidence, I was writing about looking out a window this week! I try to keep connected to nature by looking out my window every day at breakfast time. It encourages me to venture outside.

Nice post, Alison! I used to go out with field guide and binoculars quite often myself. My kids and I did a lot of birdwatching in Southern Ontario.
